This my mother and her grandmother together at a dance contest c. 1956 the year before she met my father. I wrote about the dancing in a poem :<\/p>\n

DIVIDENDS.<\/p>\n

The 78s my father bought
\nseemed to break of their own accord.
\nSplinters of black shellac
\nbulging the faded paper sleeves.
\nPerhaps each crack took a moment with it.<\/p>\n

My father in tassled cowboy shirt
\nsetting needle on Capitol and Brunswick.
\nOr with my mother, before their wedding,
\npracticing steps in the front room
\nlike they did before every dancing contest
\non the sprung dance-floor of the Co-Op.<\/p>\n

Somewhere there are medals to prove
\nthat all that lace and Brylcreem
\nreally did spill and twirl between
\nthe banks of collapsible wooden chairs.<\/p>\n

By \u201973 the ballroom sparkle had died
\nreplaced by a shop-floor of Hoovers
\nthat I\u2019d slouch through as mum
\ncashed in her book of dividend stamps.<\/p>\n

Some Sunday evenings they\u2019d play records
\nas bomb and bullet crackled on TV
\ntrying to teach me and my sister
\nthe foxtrot, tango and waltz.<\/p>\n
