The initial programme brought artists, mainly from Lady Bay Open Studios, to deliver workshops in a wide range of media, and make group visits to some arts events. It began in August 2004 and presented work in a public exhibition in November 2004 and on a website, when the name Double Vision was first adopted.
The workshops included woodcarving, drawing, watercolour, collage, creative writing, clay work, printmaking, digital animation, stixx construction and handmade books. After the exhibition, some participants kept their artwork and some was put on permanent display in the project.
Artists invited in were Bill Ming, Sue Sareen and Kate Cocksedge, the Lady Bay Open Studios artists were Rod Bailey, Karen Walsgrove, Fran Tristram, Hazel Mills, Mike Crook and Carol Crowe. Double Impact staff often joined in workshops and supported visits, especially Eleanor Youdell (née Kelsall) and Geri Griffin.
The collective woodcarving, made working with Bill Ming, is a wall sculpture that can be seen hanging in the office, and it featured as the front cover of the 2004-2005 Double Impact Annual Report. Collage images were used for the 2004 DAAT Christmas card. The Stixx workshop created a folding screen from individual pieces of work, one of these, a Cat, became our website logo (thank you, Kev).
The exhibition at the Surface Gallery, Nottingham was held for a week, and included a reception, with speeches, flowers, fruit kebabs and smoothies. Partners and other interested projects and organisations were invited to see the artwork and meet participants.
Small URL address cards were made with images from the artwork and given away to promote the website. These were produced ‘in house’ with 40 different kinds made so each participant had at least one card carrying their work, and all the activities were shown.
