Second Wind was the title of a set of illustrations to my poems and songs that my friend Laura Stenhouse made in 1992.<\/p>\n

Second Wind<\/strong><\/p>\n
Under guttering stars
\nand moon lost in clouds
\nlike the only working headlight
\non the Co-op delivery van,
\nemerald bonnet and silver radiator
\nnow passing them,
\nrun five figures.
\nLeft-back, goalie, centre-half,
\ninside-right, winger.
\nThe ice fogs breath, crackles under studs,
\nshatters in the white blaze of puddles
\nas strides pound eastwards
\ndown the tarmac road
\nknown locally as the \u2018straight mile\u2019.
\nMy father\u2019s village team out training
\nFebruary 1956
\nfor a cup match at the weekend.
\nHurtling down empty roads
\nbetween black fields.
\nShouts like stray passes
\nbouncing off trees and clouds.<\/p>\n
The same road ten years later.
\nA grey Morris Minor hitting sixty.
\nDoor panels shudder and shake
\nas an unhealthy engine complains.
\nWe\u2019re testing the brakes
\nWe\u2019ve spent all morning repairing.
\nAt least that\u2019s what dad says as we
\nshoot down the straight mile grinning.
\nI lean my six-year old face
\nout the window until my eyes run.
\nI gulp and gulp in the cold air
\nLike a pike pulled out of water.
\nThe dust and haze of harvest fields
\nspins away in the chrome side mirror.<\/p>\n
Shouts ring in my ear.
\nRemember to pace yourself.
\nKeep a second wind.
\nIf you\u2019re one down
\ndon\u2019t argue
\ngo back and score one against them.<\/p>\n
I breathe deeply and thread the words together.
\nI pull one back.
