The event will be fol\u00c2\u00adlowed by a one-day sym\u00c2\u00adpo\u00c2\u00adsium of invited speak\u00c2\u00aders, \u00c2\u00a0includ\u00c2\u00ading Prof. Patrick McGuin\u00c2\u00adness (Uni\u00c2\u00adver\u00c2\u00adsity of Oxford), Prof. Andrew Thacker (De Mont\u00c2\u00adfort Uni\u00c2\u00adver\u00c2\u00adsity), and Dr Nadine Holdsworth (Uni\u00c2\u00adver\u00c2\u00adsity of Warwick).<\/p>\n<p>Recent crit\u00c2\u00adi\u00c2\u00adcal work on region\u00c2\u00adal\u00c2\u00adism in lit\u00c2\u00ader\u00c2\u00ada\u00c2\u00adture has sought to reassess both its scope and its con\u00c2\u00adtin\u00c2\u00adu\u00c2\u00ading impor\u00c2\u00adtance over the course of the twen\u00c2\u00adti\u00c2\u00adeth and twenty-first cen\u00c2\u00adturies. For instance, Scott Her\u00c2\u00adring has recently empha\u00c2\u00adsised \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthe impor\u00c2\u00adtance of local\u00c2\u00adity to modernism\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s world-imaginary\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, echo\u00c2\u00ading Ray\u00c2\u00admond Williams\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call for the equa\u00c2\u00adtion between mod\u00c2\u00adernism and the met\u00c2\u00adro\u00c2\u00adpol\u00c2\u00adi\u00c2\u00adtan to be reassessed.<\/p>\n<p>This col\u00c2\u00adlo\u00c2\u00adca\u00c2\u00adtion of local\u00c2\u00adity and moder\u00c2\u00adnity can be seen in the fic\u00c2\u00adtions of, among oth\u00c2\u00aders, D.H. Lawrence, Storm Jame\u00c2\u00adson, George Moore, Caradoc Evans, Sylvia Townsend Warner, and Lewis Gras\u00c2\u00adsic Gib\u00c2\u00adbon. Even James Joyce\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Ulysses derives its cos\u00c2\u00admo\u00c2\u00adlog\u00c2\u00adi\u00c2\u00adcal uni\u00c2\u00adver\u00c2\u00adsal\u00c2\u00adism from a micro\u00c2\u00adscopic atten\u00c2\u00adtion to the local details of its provin\u00c2\u00adcial urban set\u00c2\u00adting. In the post-war period, the cur\u00c2\u00adrency of regional themes in British fic\u00c2\u00adtion is appar\u00c2\u00adent in nov\u00c2\u00adels by writ\u00c2\u00aders like Alan Sil\u00c2\u00adli\u00c2\u00adtoe, Muriel Spark, Ray\u00c2\u00admond Williams, Gra\u00c2\u00adham Swift, Pat Barker, and Jim Crace.<\/p>\n<p>A sim\u00c2\u00adi\u00c2\u00adlar rich\u00c2\u00adness of inter\u00c2\u00adests in ideas of place and intra-national iden\u00c2\u00adti\u00c2\u00adties can be found in the late mod\u00c2\u00adernist poetry of Hugh Mac\u00c2\u00adDi\u00c2\u00adarmid, David Jones, and Basil Bunting, and Patrick Kavanagh\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s advo\u00c2\u00adcacy of the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpoetry of the parish\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 has also had a wide and last\u00c2\u00ading influ\u00c2\u00adence. Regional themes, set\u00c2\u00adtings, and dialects strongly colour the work of Ted Hughes, R.S. Thomas, George Mackay Brown, Paul Mul\u00c2\u00addoon, Gillian Clarke, and Roy Fisher, amongst many oth\u00c2\u00aders. In the work of a younger gen\u00c2\u00ader\u00c2\u00ada\u00c2\u00adtion of poets and nov\u00c2\u00adel\u00c2\u00adists there is a strik\u00c2\u00ading con\u00c2\u00adver\u00c2\u00adgence between local expe\u00c2\u00adri\u00c2\u00adence and the pres\u00c2\u00adsure of inter\u00c2\u00adna\u00c2\u00adtional con\u00c2\u00adtexts and relations.<\/p>\n<p>British and Irish drama saw a resur\u00c2\u00adgence of local pride at the start of the twen\u00c2\u00adti\u00c2\u00adeth cen\u00c2\u00adtury. From 1904, the act\u00c2\u00ading and play-writing ener\u00c2\u00adgies of Dublin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Abbey The\u00c2\u00adatre were emu\u00c2\u00adlated by a num\u00c2\u00adber of other regional reper\u00c2\u00adtory the\u00c2\u00adatres in Man\u00c2\u00adches\u00c2\u00adter, Birm\u00c2\u00ading\u00c2\u00adham, Liv\u00c2\u00ader\u00c2\u00adpool, Glas\u00c2\u00adgow, and Belfast. And in recent years, com\u00c2\u00adpa\u00c2\u00adnies includ\u00c2\u00ading The\u00c2\u00adatre Work\u00c2\u00adshop, Druid, Knee\u00c2\u00adhigh, and Field Day have attempted to stage work that speaks to audi\u00c2\u00adences away from the usual cen\u00c2\u00adtres of the\u00c2\u00adatri\u00c2\u00adcal power and influence.<\/p>\n<p>It will be the pur\u00c2\u00adpose of this sym\u00c2\u00adpo\u00c2\u00adsium to explore the vari\u00c2\u00adety and diver\u00c2\u00adsity of expres\u00c2\u00adsions given to region\u00c2\u00adal\u00c2\u00adism in British and Irish lit\u00c2\u00ader\u00c2\u00ada\u00c2\u00adture and cul\u00c2\u00adture dur\u00c2\u00ading the twen\u00c2\u00adti\u00c2\u00adeth and twenty-first cen\u00c2\u00adturies, with a par\u00c2\u00adtic\u00c2\u00adu\u00c2\u00adlar empha\u00c2\u00adsis upon mod\u00c2\u00adernism and its after-effects.
