Terry Allen – Unititled 1985

Yippy aye ay…

Having got the nitty gritty housekeeping worries out the way in entry #5 I now moving on to what inspires me and basically this guy does…I adding all info. here so my mentor can get a handle on this guy before we meet. All kinds of cross-overs and links going on and this quote sums it all up…On his friendship with talking heads man David Byrne….

We’re friends and we work very different from one another, pills the way we write songs, the nature of our curiosities. But the real common denominator is that neither of us particularly give a hang about high art, fine art, pop culture or popular art. I think it’s about what inspires you, what moves you, what makes you laugh, whatever it is. The information is the same. I just think HOW we get it is very different and how it presents itself.

YES INDEEDY

I have been collecting info. recordings and material on Terry in magazines since 1985!!!!

So must be something in it..what he does is welds the different archetypes as mentioned below into a coherant whole..Texas songwriter tradition, Painter and printmaker and also the writer tradition (playwright)…only person i know so far who does that in a totally Fine Art context…many songwriters dabble in art and writing e.g. |Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash but Allen comes at if from an almost architectural angle…especially with installation and publice art work (see links below)

Terry Allen now lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, but his roots are deep in Texas; Lubbock, Texas. He is as well known for his raw, rockabilly music–The Panhandle Mystery Band–as for his visual art. A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Bessie Award, and an Isadora Duncan Award, Allen specializes in installation and performance art, and in cast-bronze sculpture, but he is equally proficient in printmaking and other media. His irreverence and ironic sense of humor are his trademarks, and a careful observer will also find tongue-in-cheek references to the history of modern art.
