Journal #9: Beyond the Gallery

Amazing how a deadline concentrates the mind!

About to start the assignment as deadline Monday. Want to get in post today if possible.
I unable to meet with mentor before deadline but ran past couple of fellow artists before submitting.

I suppose lucky that I had 25 plus years of ‘research’ for this.

Goldfactory and Chalkfish Press?

Building on the development of the Goldfactory research space and website I will try and organise an exhibition of text-related artworks building on the groundwork of the TYPO 1 show I curated in september 2006 and presented at NCN Nottingham. I will do this to launch a ‘Chalkfish Press’ a fine art press dedicated to graphic/graphic novel/writing/art interface. Following correspondence with a friend I hope to not only launch the exhibition but a first pamphlet/graphic novel too.

It could be in a formal gallery ‘space’ that available or in a presently ‘non-gallery’ space in the City of Nottingham. It could even be within an artist’s studio complex or across a series of studios con-currently e.g. Oldknows / Banks Mill / Harrington Mill etc. The optimum time for running the show would be in October to complement the Open Studios activity which ocurs in Nottingham at that time. To achieve this I shall have to co-ordinate a series of spaces or organise a ‘travelling show’ (circus? including readings and muical performances?;-) that commenced with Open Studios and then moved around East Midlands ( a mini touring event) even to Leicester and Lincoln!

At present I believe I could find enough artists within East Midlands who utilise text in their work in some way and this relates well to ACE/Lincoln council objectives etc etc.
