A Song by Darden Smith and Boo Hewerdine off ‘Evidence’ recording 1985 which acts as a metaphor for the show being a ad hoc and spontaneous collaboration between two musicians from UK and USA and stands for the Americana metaphors and influences on my own work.
The image of the cow skull also resonates with the frieze on the Usher building itself. The original artwork is by Austin Texas artist Julie Speed.
In despair I have turned on my own production rather like a dog knawing its own leg……..as one of the fellow ‘Connectees’ said maybe I could use old work in a ‘new way’. This sunk in and finally I have a plan for the exhibition.
It may be controversial it certainly will not spend time worrying about labels…or ‘interpretation’. My plan draws on contemporary American practice notably in California and Phoenix, sale Arizona….especially with regard to ‘presentation’.
I will work in a spontaneous and ‘studio-like’ manner which ironic considering I no longer have a studio space….
For the four weeks the wall space I ‘allotted’ will become my ‘map’ and ‘studio space’.
The work itself will not recognise generic boundaries between methods of production or ‘scripted’ narratives. It may change over the four weeks. It may not.
It is a re-ordering of my own means of production. It challenges boundaries of participatory and ‘authorial’ work. It may encourage comment and ‘participation.
It may or may not link with other ‘interventions’ in another city and institution.
It does not recognise any time frame but rather represents a ‘snapshot’ of my overall working method at a particular juncture. A bit like Kurt Schwitters an ongoing ‘Merzbau’ but with more of a CPD angle…..
i.e. this not obsessive behaviour dear tutors it simply a means to and end.
Hopefully will have two ‘outcomes’ so beloved of our tutors…
It is a fluid creation……it does not recognise academic authorial limitations…it exists of and for its own self…

1. An overview of where I am now and where I going in ALL fields…all work is coexistant and ongoing…
NO part of the work is of less worth than another. The spurious, recipe unformed, malady critical, sketchy and contingent is as important in defining the style of the piece as any other…
I have no plan for its appearance..aesthetic decisions made on spur of moment will control deployment…
It will contain everthing and nothing…associations will arise by chance, play and purpose…..
2. It will signpost a route forward and act as a clearing house for next step..whatever that is..no decisions will be made in advance…
It is just the beginning….
